Question

I'm a student, and I'm not sure if I've ever received the American Opportunity/Hope credits. I don't believe I've ever had a Form 8863. Is there a way to be sure?

You need to find out if your parents ever used the AOC on their returns if you were claimed as a dependent on their tax returns in any past years. You can use the AOC for a total of 4 years of undergraduate education, but if your parents ever used it--that "counts" toward the four times.
