I'm trying to enter my son's name into the Tuition Tax Break area and it only has my name. It will not let me add his name. Why is that?

Make sure you have your son added as your Dependent in the MY INFO section. You should EDIT his info all the way until TurboTax tells you he 'qualifies as your dependent.'

In the Education section, there is a dropdown menu to select the Student.

Thank you for your response. My ex declares my son as a dependent and I searched and found out that only the person who claims him as a dependent can get the credit for college.

A. Yes. That person may claim the tuition credit, even if you were the one that paid the tuition.

Although the general rule, in taxes, is that you must be the one making the payment, to get the deduction or credit, there is an exception for education.
