Question

I'm trying to enter tuition and enrollment fees for 2019 and the field is grey with $0. I can enter book expenses. Can I not claim tuition and fees?

Yes, you can enter those expenses.  It is just a little trickier than before.

Start by going to the Education section of your return using these steps:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “education” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to education
  • Click on the blue “Jump to education” link

Then, if you are not prompted to enter your 1098-T, go through the entire education expenses section of your return until you reach the screen titled “Your Education Expenses Summary”, then follow these steps:

  • Click Edit next to the student name.
  • On the screen titled “Here’s your Education Summary”, click Edit beside Tuition.
  • Enter the information from your Form 1098-T.

I have tried that numerous times and it does not let me enter the tuition amount.  It says that I have already entered it.  I cannot find where to update that number.  I even got so frustrated that I started a brand new return and it still came up with a 0 for tuition and said that I already entered it.  HOW can I update this number?

If you've already started to post some of your expenses you will have to continue through the questions.  You will come to a point where you can add a student.  You can Edit, Delete or add your tuition information here.
