Question

I need to claim a Scholarship. The TurboTax AI assistant gave me instructions on where to go. The problem is the Scholarships tab doesn't exist where it sent me.

These are the instructions I was given:
1. Sign in to your TurboTax account and select the 2023 tax year.
2. Click on "Federal" from the left-hand menu and then select "Wages & Income."
3. Scroll down to the "Less Common Income" section and select "Show More."
4. Select "Scholarships and Grants" and then click "Start" to begin entering your scholarship information.
5. Follow the prompts to enter the necessary information about your scholarship, including the amount received and how it was used.
6. TurboTax will automatically calculate any taxable portion of your scholarship income based on the information you provide.

The program has been adjusted.

Go to

Deductions & Credits

Education

Go through the interview "as if" you will report a 1098-T regardless if you do or not. (just bypass the 1098-T if you are not entering one).

At some point the program will ask about scholarships not on 1098-T.

Enter the amount of the taxable portion there.

It will go to Schedule 1 line 8r

When you enter scholarship amounts, but do not enter any qualified expenses, e.g. tuition in box 1 of a 1098-T, TurboTax will automatically treat the scholarship amounts as taxable.
