Question

I no longer make student loan payments and so I have no interest for 2017. I am unable to remove student loan info from my tax return. Can I lave this blank?

Yes, you can leave it blank. However, if the software continues to request an amount, you should delete it. 

Follow the instructions below, to do so: 

  1. Log into the software and select the blue button Take me to my return
  2. Select Federal from the left side bar 
  3. Then select Deductions & Credits from the categories along the top of the software 
  4. Scroll down to the section labelled Education
  5. Next to Student Loan Interest Paid select Update/edit
  6. At the next screen, if you see your lender form listed with Edit & Delete buttons, then go to step #8. Otherwise, if the software begins asking you to enter your student loan interest, enter $1 and continue through the screens. 
  7. When you are back at the main Deductions & Credits listing, go back into this section again (steps 4 & 5). 
  8. You'll see a screen titled Here's what you paid in student loan interest and you'll see your lender listed. To the right of the listing, click the Delete button to remove it.
