Question

I only received a 1098-T from college but is asking for the interest paid listed on form 1098-E which I don't have. How do I get a 1098-E form?

If you don't have a student loan, you will not get the 1098-E. Leave everything related to the E blank. Your goal is to maximize  your AOTC credit. Hopefully, box 1 is at least $4,000 more than box 5. Otherwise, you will want to claim some of the scholarship towards room and board.

There are way too many people that fail to realize the the box 5 scholarships can be applied to room and board and other expenses of college that are not tuition, books, and required materials. If you choose to include that scholarship in your income, you have the education expenses from box 1 or 2, left to claim the education credits.

Most people are always trying to reduce their income so they subtract box 1 from box 5 and enter the difference. People get a certain mindset, reduce income and making the jump to increase credits is hard for them.  See IRS Q & A about education credits

@caraballo0802  Your question is not clear.

Are you trying to claim the student loan interest deduction (a separate tax break from the tuition credit) but your loan company didn't send you a 1098-E.  If so you can claim the deduction from your own records.

The 1098-E has nothing to do with claiming a tuition credit.  You don't need one.
