I paid college tuition for an undergraduate who is my granddaughter can I take the credit for the tuition or the $2500

If the student is not a dependent on your federal tax return you cannot enter any education expenses for the student or receive any education credits for the student.

No.

But, if the student is her parent's dependent, they may claim the tuition credit, even though they didn't pay it.  Although the general rule, in taxes, is that the taxpayer must be the one making the payment, to get the deduction/credit, there is an exception for education.  If she is no one's dependent, she can usually claim it (there's a limit if she is under 24).
