Question

I paid the difference between my tuition expenses and the "scholarships or grants". This totals to $966.95 out of my own pocket. How can I get this deducted?

You can claim the education expenses you paid out of your pocket and the Form 1098-T into the Education Credit section of your return as long as long as no other taxpayer claims you as a dependent on their return

If you are claimed as a dependent on another return, then they have to include the Education Credit on their income tax return using all education expenses paid.
