I received a 1098T from my school that I attended in 2016, do I need to enter it in my return? or is it optional?

It is not required that the 1098-T be entered. It is only an informational document. However receipt of a 1098-T frequently means you are either eligible for a tuition credit or deduction or possibly have taxable scholarship income. If neither of those are true, you do not need to do anything.
