Question

I received my 2020 1098-T. Box#1, is showing nothing. I talked to the school and he sent me my Spring 2020 Statement. I paid over 8K in 2020 on tuition. Can you help?

I understand the law was changed in 2018. I was told that my 2020 year may have been charged in December 2019, but from talking to student billing at the school. There should be a dollar amount in my Box#1 of my 2020 1098-T. I have my 2020 billing statement from the school that I can send. Thank you

The 1098-T is only an informational document. The numbers on it are not required to be entered onto your tax return. However receipt of a 1098-T frequently means you are either eligible for a tuition credit or deduction or possibly your student has taxable scholarship income.

If you claim the tuition credit, you do need to report that you got one or that you qualify for an exception (the TurboTax interview will handle this)

You claim the tuition credit, or report scholarship income, based on your own financial records, not the 1098-T. In the 1098-T screen, click on the link "What if this is not what I paid the school" underneath box 1. You will then be able to enter the actual amounts paid.

Do not send any attachments, like your billing statement. It will prevent e-filing and delay your return. Yours is a common situation and no proof is needed at this time.
