Q. Is that normal?

A.  No.  But possible.

The 1098-T is only an informational document. The numbers on it are not required to be entered onto your tax return. You have to determine if there are any tax consequences from receiving the document.  You may have to ask the school why you got it.

If you have an amount in box 1, usually you cannot claim it for a tuition credit or deduction.  To qualify payments must be made in the year the classes were taken in.   If there is an amount in box 5, it may mean the school applied a scholarship payment to your account.  As long as that amount covered qualified expenses, even in the previous year, it is not taxable.
