Question

I was claimed as a dependent in 2018 for the form 8863. I am no longer a dependent. Do I have to ask my parents how long they received the American Opportunity credit?

under the question Did you ever receive the American Opportunity or Hope Credit? It says select yes if you were a dependent of a parent and they claimed on of these last year. I selected yes due to this. Now it is asking me to Enter the number of years the American Opportunity and Hope credit have been claimed for you. So do I need to ask my parents for this information.

You do need to find out how many times your parents got the AOC for you.  You can use it a total of four times during your undergraduate college education, but if your parents used it --- those times count toward the total.
