Question

I was just told that sometimes it’s better to not report your 1098-T to get a better refund. Since the school doesn’t send the information out, that I won’t get in trouble. Is this true

You may have taxable income if your scholarship income is more than your education expenses. When you enter your form 1098-T information in TurboTax, the program will determine if this applies to you, so it is possible that your tax would increase based on your scholarship income.

You are required to report taxable scholarship income even if it is not reported on your 1098-T form.
