Question

I was not a full time student in 2019, but I paid off $1,753.51 to a debt collector. It's tuition fees placed by my university. Can I claim it as education expense? How?

Yes - even though you were not a full time student in 2019, you may qualify for the Lifetime Learning Credit.  Enter the amount you paid for tuition, books, supplies, etc.  Do NOT include any collection fees that may be in that amount.  If you received a 1098-T from your university, use the numbers on that form.

To enter the 1098-Ts please follow these steps:

  1. In your return, click on Federal > Deductions.
  2. In the Education section, click Start/Revisit next to Expenses and Scholarships (Form 1098-T).
  3. Continue through the screens, entering the requested information.
