It depends on the type of 1098 you have. 

 

If it is a 1098-INT for Mortgage interest that means you don't have any deductible mortgage interest for the year. You don't have to file that with your tax return because it won't change anything. Be sure to check for other deductions that could be listed like property taxes. 

 

If you a 1098-E  with a blank box 1 that means you didn't pay any student loan interest, so you don't have to report that on your tax return. 

 

If it is a 1098-T and you have a figure in box 5, you need to report the form in the Education credit section.

 

Here's how to do that:

 

 

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.
  2. Select Deductions & Credits. 
  3. Select the down arrow to the right of Education.
  4. Select Start to the right of Expenses and Scholarships (Form 1098-T). 
  5. Answer the first question Yes.
  6. Answer the remaining questions according to you situation.
