Only if the scholarship amount meets the filing requirements under $1,100 as unearned income.

No, unless the scholarship amount is more than $12,200. 

 

While taxable scholarships are not technically earned income, that money is treated as earned income for purposes of calculating a dependent's standard deduction.  So, the student owes not tax if his income is less than $12,200.
