Question

If I did not receive a 1098-E form, my interest paid on student loans was $565, does it not need to be included in my tax return?

Even if you did not get a form 1098-E, if you wish, you can claim the amount of interest you paid by using your account statement. You are not required to report it.

If you wish to claim the student loan interest, follow these steps:

  1. Open your tax return
  2. Click on Federal in the left panel.
  3. Click on Deductions & Credits at the top
  4. Scroll down to the Education section. Click Show more
  5. Select Start next to Student Loan Interest Paid (Form 1098-E)
