Yes.  An associate degree usually means you have only completed the first 2 years of college.  The disqualifier for the American opportunity credit is completion of the first 4 years of post secondary education. For most people that means a bachelor's degree.

Yes, if you cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else and meet the other requirements for the American Opportunity Credit:

  • Be pursuing a degree or other recognized education credential
  • Be enrolled at least half-time for at least one academic period* beginning in the tax year
  • Not have finished the first four years of higher education at the beginning of the tax year
  • Not have claimed the AOTC or the former Hope credit for more than four tax years
  • Not have a felony drug conviction at the end of the tax year (IRS)

Please be aware you cannot claim the credit if your Modified Adjusted Gross Income is over $90,000 ($180,000 for joint filers).

Please follow the instructions below to check if you qualify:

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “1098T”
  3. Click on “Jump to 1098T”
