Question

If I have had my tuition refunded due to withdrawing an enrollment last year, but still received a 1098-T for my tuition payment, should I include it in my taxes?

I had to withdraw my enrollment to grad school last year due to COVID related reasons. I had my tuition completely refunded along with a few other miscellaneous expenses (enrollment fee and student union fee), so I didn't really consider how that would impact my taxes until I received a 1098-T from my university concerning my tuition payment. It seems strange to be reporting the information from that form if I received a refund, hence why I ask about it.

If the total tuition amount was refunded to you, you don't need to report form 1098-T on your return.

The 1098-T is only an informational document. The numbers on it are not required to be entered onto your tax return. However receipt of a 1098-T frequently means you are either eligible for a tuition credit or deduction or possibly your student has taxable scholarship income.

You claim the tuition credit, or report scholarship income, based on your own financial records, not the 1098-T.

If you don't need to do either, just don't enter the 1098-T
