Question

If I only attended graduate school for the Spring 2021 semester (NOT Fall 2020), should I include 1098-T information in my 2020 filing?

The 1098-T form given to me by my school doesn't have information in Box 1, or most other boxes, and doesn't say I'm a full time student. I started my current program in January 2021, but I attended full time for the Spring 2021 semseter. Should this be reflected in my 2020 filing?

Simple answer: no. The 1098-T is only an informational document. The numbers on it are not required to be entered onto your tax return.

But, why did you get this 1098-T:  If there was an amount in box 5, that could be considered taxable income. But if you know that scholarship amount will be used to offset tuition charges made in 2021, you can ignore it.

You'll have to keep track, of the numbers, since your 2021 1098-T boxes 5 & 1 will not match.

You claim the tuition credit, or report scholarship income, based on your own financial records, not the 1098-T.
