If I paid cash for my sons tuition why is my refund more if I don’t include his tuition on my return?

It is an accredited electrical lineman college that is not required to send out a 1098t

Sounds like you may be entering the tuition as income, rather than expenses.

In TurboTax (TT), enter tuition at:

Federal Taxes Tab (Personal for H&B version)

Deductions & Credits

-Scroll down to:

--Education

  --Education Expenses

After telling TT that you don't have a 1098-T, answer yes to the exception question.

I selected “no” for the 1098t and answered “yes” for the exception. The tuition is entered under “tuition and enrollment fees” in the education section.  My refund is still more if I leave out the $20k I paid for his school. This doesn’t make sense to me?
