Question

If my dependent son's 1098t is under his social security number and I am filing under my social security number, how is this going to work?

If your son is your dependent on your tax return then only you can claim the education expenses on your tax return and possible qualify for education credits. Please follow these steps to enter the 1098-T:

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on the Search box on the top and type “1098T”
  3. Click on “Jump to 1098T”

Please see What education tax credits are available? for additional information.

Despite the fact that the 1098-T is under your dependent's name  social security number, you enter it on your tax return.

Since he is your dependent, only you can claim the tuition credit or deduction.

If it turns out that some of his scholarship is taxable, he. too, will enter the 1098-T on his return.  That is, there are situations where it is entered in both places
