Question

If my employer paid for my school tuition but I paid textbooks and he paid directly to the school. How do I deal with this in my tax return? Can I use my 1098-T form?

Yes, you can still enter your Form 1098-T to claim a tax break.

Since your employer paid for your tuition, you can only qualify for a credit or deduction based on the cost you pay for your textbooks.

In TurboTax online, here are the steps:

  • Sign in to your account, select Pick up where you left off
  • At the right upper corner, in the search box, type in "1098t" and Enter
  • Select Jump to 1098t
  • On the screen, Now Let's gather XYZ's Additional Education Expenses
  • Follow prompts
  • Next screen, Your Education Expenses Summary, select Edit
  • Next screen Here's Your Education Summary, under Tuition, select Edit to enter tuition information

What if I didn't get a 1098 T but I still paid for textbooks and have the receipt. How do I claim that expense?

In the education interview, you are asked separately about tuition, books and supplies purchased directly from the school that were required for your program of study, and books and supplies purchased from other sellers that were required for your program of study.  Enter the books in the appropriate place.  Books are eligible for the AOTC but not the Lifetime Learning credit (I think) so you may get a benefit depending on which credit you claim.
