I'm an international student and I have my SSN. I want to know if I could start a business and get an EIN to get a loan for a business. Would getting an EIN put at risk my J-1 status?

The J-1 classification (exchange visitors) is authorized for those who intend to participate in an approved program for the purpose of teaching, instructing or lecturing, studying, observing, conducting research, consulting, demonstrating special skills, receiving training, or to receive graduate medical education or training.

Employment is authorized for J-1 nonimmigrants only under the terms of the exchange program. Please check with your sponsoring agency for more information on any restrictions that may apply to you working in the United States.

It would be hard to start a company on J1 visa, considering J1 employment is restricted to a specific employer that has to be approved by the sponsoring organization.
