If you default on a federal student loan,  usually your tax refunds can be taken to help cover what you owe. But, the government has paused this program and other collection activities through Sept. 30, 2021, due to the pandemic. You can call 1-800-304-3107 to find out if your tax refund will be affected by an FMS offset.

Please see Treasury Offset Program & Debt Management Services for additional information.

If you paid student loan interest then you can still claim them on your 2020 tax return.

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on the Search box on the top and type “1098E”
  3. Click on “Jump to 1098E”

Please see Can I claim my student loan? for additional information.
