Is the lifetime learning credit the same as the hope credit on form 8863?

No. The hope credit is no longer available. It was replaced by the American Opportunity Credit. The Lifetime Learning Credit.

The Hope credit is ancient history. The only time it comes up, now, is that it must be counted as one (or more) of the four times a student, or his parents, have claimed the American Opportunity Credit, in the past (line 23 of form 8863). The TurboTax interview handles that, even though line 23, of form 8863, no longer tells you that (that how ancient it is).
