The scholarship amount reported on the 1098-T is greater than the qualified expenses by $9,000 (room and board) and she had a part-time job earning $2,000.

If you use your scholarship to pay for any of these, it counts as income and the amount paid is taxable:

    • Room and board
    • Travel and incidental expenses
    • Any fees, books, and supplies or equipment that are not required for your courses

However, since her scholarship income and wages (W-2) are under $12,000, none of it would be taxable and therefore she is not required to file an income tax return.
