Issue with American Opportunity Credit

Hi! While filing for my education deductions and credits, TurboTax says that I qualify for the American Opportunity Credit. It then asks if I've received a letter or notification from the IRS stating I need to fill out Form 8862 to claim the American Opportunity Credit. I didn't, and so I click "No", but then it continues without adding the credit as if nothing happened. How can I claim the credit?

Also, evidently I qualify for the Lifetime Learning Credit too, though TurboTax isn't letting me select it as an alternative. If the AOC doesn't work out, is there a way to switch to the LLC?

Thank you in advance, it's greatly appreciated!

Just keep "continuing".  You will reach a screen where TT will "optimize" the education credit.

You can check it by typing "letme" in the search box in TT and it will give you the option to select LLC. Try it, if you get better results, leave it, otherwise change it back.

Type letme (no space between let & me) in the search box. When the dropdown list appears, click on letme rather than "jump to letme'. On the next drop down, click on the "jump to letme” link.

TT will give you the option to select another tuition  credit or deduction.
