Question

It says throughout my tax return that I don't qualify for the lifetime learning credit, but when I go to file it says I have to upgrade because I do have the credit?

On the page after I enter educational expenses, it shows that I do not qualify for the American Opportunity Credit or the Lifetime Learning credit, but when I go to file it's saying I can't file for free because I have the lifetime learning credit, though it shows I don't. Please help!

If you don't qualify for the Lifetime Learning Credit,  or want to eliminate it, you'll have to delete the forms that are related to education credits.

If you see form 8863 and form 1098-T, delete them. Click here for instructions

First be sure that you do not qualify for either of the education credits.  It may be worth the upgrade to get the credit. Review the American Opportunity Credit qualifications here and the Lifetime Learning Credit qualifications here.

Once you are sure you don't qualify then use the "Delete a form" function to delete the forms 1098-T and 8863 as Hal_Al suggests.

1. Select "Tax Tools" in the left hand menu
2. Select "Tools"
3. Select "Delete a Form"
4. Find the 1098-T and then form 8863
5. "Delete"
6. "Confirm Deletion"
