Question

Lifetime Learning Credit was not included in my TurboTax filing

I filled out my taxes on TurboTax Deluxe listing myself as a student. The software did not prompt about Lifetime Learning Credit. I only just found out I qualify, now I need to file an amendment. This seems like a big omission! Worth $2000.

Your next steps depend on whether your filed return is accepted or rejected by the IRS.

If your return is rejected, you can simply add your Lifetime Learning Credit before you re-submit your tax return.

If your filed return is accepted by the IRS, you will need to file an amended return to add your Lifetime Learning Credit.

If you need to amend, you should wait until your already-filed tax return has been processed (i.e., refund received or payment deducted from your bank account). Then, you can use TurboTax to prepare an amended return.

Click this link for instructions on how to file an amended return with TurboTax.

I'm having the same problem with TurboTax Deluxe doing my daughter's taxes (non dependent). Using "Easy Step", it's not even asking me questions about 1098-T data. I'm pretty sure she'd be eligible for the Lifetime Learning Credit based on her income and amount of tuition paid, but the program's not really providing me a way to do this via Easy Step (it's only asking about Hope Credit and American Opportunity Credit, which she hasn't ever been eligible for or taken). Although your provided the other questioner information about how to do an amended return, you didn't really say how to get the software to do the credit.

Any answers on that?

Thanks

Go through the entire education interview until you reach a scree titled "Your Education Expenses Summary".  Click edit next to the student's name. That should take you to a screen “Here’s your Education Summary”. Click edit next to the section you want to change. Start with  tuition.

Details:

To enter your Form 1098-T information (even when TurboTax thinks it has already been entered and is showing $0), go through the entire education expenses section of your return until you reach the screen titled “Your Education Expenses Summary”, then follow these steps:

  • Click Edit next to the student name.
  • On the screen titled “Here’s your Education Summary”, click Edit beside Tuition.
  • Enter the information from your Form 1098-T.

To go directly to the Education section of your return, use these steps:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “education” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to education
  • Click on the blue “Jump to education” link
