Mandatory College Course Trip For Credit

Hello,

I had a field trip to the Galapagos that was mandatory in order to receive credits for a college course counting towards a degree. I understand that transportation and room and board are not deductible, however is there any way that this would be different since it was paid directly to the college and it had to be paid in order to receive the credits? Thank you.

No, the IRS is very clear on this point. Transportation costs and room and board are not qualified education expenses.
