I am a full-time college student renting an apartment off-campus in Massachusetts and being claimed as a dependent by my parents. Can I deduct the rent I pay on my taxes?

No, a student can’t claim the rent deduction on your Massachusetts income tax return. It can only be claimed on a “principal residence.” An apartment or house of a student or faculty member who has a principal residence elsewhere is not considered a principal residence.

Massachusetts gives the following example: A University of Massachusetts undergraduate student, rents an apartment in Amherst during the school year and resides with her parents in the family home in Newton when she is not at college. Her home in Newton is her principal residence; the apartment rent is not deductible.
