Hey,

I'm a second year medical student who is using Federal loans to pay school.

I made zero income in 2019, so Do I even need to file a state and federal tax return?

    It depends.

Based on the information you have provided above, you do not have a filing requirement.

You would have a filing requirement if you make more than the following amounts in gross income:

    • $12,200 for Single
    • $24,400 for MFJ
    • $5 for MFS
    • $18,350 for HOH
    • $24,400 for Qualifying widower

I have included some additional information to help you determine if you have any filing requirements based upon your specific filing status.

Do I need to file a return

Please note each state has different filing requirements. Please comment on your state and we can help you determine if you may have to file within your state.
