The Minnesota Department of Revenue has two tax relief programs for families with children in kindergarten through 12th grade: the K-12 Education Subtraction and the K-12 Education Credit. While I don't quality for the credit because of my income, I do qualify for the subtraction. This subtraction allows me to deduct private school tuition up to $2500 for my 8th grader. For the last few years I have had to use HR block because they have it built into their software. I am never able to enter or receive credit for the subtraction through Turbo Tax. This is not a new tax law. It has been in effect for years. Please provide guidance on how I can receive this subtraction with your software.

In your Wisconsin return go to the section.  The limit for elemenarty is $4000.

Here's the Income Wisconsin handles differently:

  • Education
  • Private School Tuition
  • Enter the information for the child and then for the school
Fill in the amount you paid for tuition during the taxable year for the period when your child was an elementary pupil (but not more than $4,000).
