My 1098-T of 2015 shows money paid for 2016 term. No taxes filed in 2015, since no income. 2016 1098-T shows 0 amount. How do I claim tuition paid for 2016 in Turbo Tax?

Taxes were not filed in 2015 or 2014, since there was no income. Since I have income in 2016, and would like to deduct tuition amount that was paid in 2015. 2016 1098-T shows no amount on all the boxes, but 1098-T for 2015 shows box 7 as marked for fees paid for the year 2016, besides 2015.

If you paid your tuition amount in 2015 for the 2016 school year, without any income, you are entitled to claim a partial credit. To do so, you will have to file a 2015 tax return to re-claim.  You cannot include it in your 2016 taxes.

There are three types of educational benefit offered by IRS, The American Opportunity Credit, Lifetime Learning Credit and the Tuition & Fees deductions.  The American Opportunity Credit provides up to $2,500 for paying for an undergraduate student's tuition. The credit is partially refundable, meaning that you might be able to get 40 percent of the tax credit even if you have no tax liability ( no income). The other 60 percent of the credit can only be used to offset your tax liability.

The Life time Learning Credit and the Tuition & Fees deductions would not apply or help you if you have no income and tax liability.

-To file a 2015 tax return with TurboTax, you will need to purchase the prior year tax product

Thanks for your answer. American Opportunity Credit will not apply as the tuition is for a medical school. I completed 2015 Taxes, but the form 8917 takes the entire amount of 2015 1098-T box 2, so how do I get to deduct tuition of 2016 in TurboTax?
