Question

My daughter 100% paid for her college and living expenses in 2018. Online searches suggests she can't claim to be independent. Turbo tax says she is. Who's right?

If your daughter paid for more than half her support for the year, you cannot claim her as a dependent.  Note, however, that any scholarship money she received while in school is not taken into account in determining if she paid for more than half her support.

If she does not meet the test for a dependent because she provided more than half her support (excluding scholarships), you should check your answers related to your daughter in the TurboTax "Personal" or "My Info" section.

See IRS Publication 501, Table 5, for the eligibility requirements for a dependent.
