Question

My daughter got a 1099Q but didn't buy her books or supplies from school. How do I do this?

For distributions from a qualified tuition plan, it is not required to purchase books and supplies from the school.  If 100% of the distribution was used for qualified expenses, you are not required to list Form 1099-Q on the tax return at all.

You can safely skip entering the form into TurboTax, but you should keep the form, along with receipts for the purchases, in a file that is easily accessible for the next three years just in case you are asked to show what the money was spent on. This isn't common, but it does happen occasionally, and if it does - you will have everything you need ready for a quick reply!

Room & Board are also qualified expenses for a 1099-Q, even if the student lived at home. The student must be half time or more.
