Question

My dtr has taken college classes while in HS. I dont want to claim the AOC yet, but want the Lifetime Learning Credit. Save AOC for future. How can I force TT to allow?

The easiest way to force the Lifetime Learning Credit instead of the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) is to answer the question, "Did the student attend school at least half-time?"  NO, even if her course load was more than half-time.

Also, if entering Form 1098-T and the box is checked for "attended at least half-time," do not check the corresponding checkbox in TurboTax.

The purpose of the question (and the box) is to determine eligibility for the AOTC, so you won't be in any "trouble" if this is not truly the case.

A "no" answer to this question will disallow the AOTC but will allow the Lifetime Learning Credit when all of the other qualifications for the credit are met.
