That is correct.   Dependents are not eligible to receive a stimulus check.   The parents of a child older than 16 do not receive stimulus checks #1 or #2 for the dependents, but you can get the 3rd one for a dependent older than 16----so if you want to share the $1400 with him you can do that.

Under the CARES Act, if you are claimed, or qualify to be claimed, as a dependent on someone else’s 2019 return you cannot receive a stimulus check, in 2020.   If you qualified as a dependent for 2019, but will not be for 2020, you will most likely get it in 2021, when you file a 2020 tax return.

Note that the requirement is not just whether you are actually claimed as a dependent, it's whether you qualify to be claimed as a dependent.

 

On your 2020 federal tax return you will be able to enter the amount of the payment that you are eligible to receive on the Form 1040 Line 30 (TurboTax handles this)
