Question

My scholarship didn't cover all of my educational expenses, but it is appearing as income when I enter my 1098T. The FAQ says that's wrong, so how do I fix it?

My scholarship covered all of my tuition ($20,950), but, as a graduate student, I did not have the option of getting room and board (so these are not included in my scholarship and thus not part of the equation). I still had to pay the university $370.00 in administrative fees.

I recommend reviewing your input in the federal section of the return to ensure you included all of qualified expenses.

  1. Go to the Federal section of the program
  2.  Select "Deductions & Credits"
  3.  Select "Expenses and Scholarships (Form 1098-T)" and click start/edit

Make sure you select "Edit" next to your child's name so you can enter your 1098-T information.

Review your input on the 1098-T form.  When you continue, you should see the following screen:

Edit education

Click Edit on each section as it applies to you.  If you have other expenses for books, labs, etc that are directly related to your education, be sure to enter those amounts in this section.
