Question

My son has been going to a school for children with disabilities.Can I deduct this Special Needs tuition and school meals?Can I also deduct expenses for his school trips?

He is diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, Slow Processing Speed, Executive Function Disorder and Dysgraphia.

You can deduct the portion of his tuition and fees that are considered necessary for his treatment.   You cannot deduct meals, housing expense (in most cases) field trips (except those that are part of the treatment plan), or other personal expenses.  The cost of transportation to and from the school would be considered like other medical travel expense and you can deduct the miles driven or cost of bus or plane tickets, etc..

 

Many of these types of schools have guides available from their billing department to help you identify the deductible portion. 

 

Your deduction is still limited in the same way as other medical expenses - you can deduct only the amount that exceeds 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income, and only if you are itemizing deductions.
