Question

My son was considered a full-time student at his school, taking a full load. However, graduation was in April 2021. Can I consider him a full-time student?

Unfortunately, no, since he was not in attendance for 5 months—unless he continued school in the Fall. But if he did not earn more than $4,300 and you provided more than half of his support, you can still claim him.

No, in order to claim him as a FT student, he would have to be enrolled for at least 5 months during the year.

Q. Can I consider him a full-time student?

A. No, At least,  not for purposes of being your dependent, under the “qualifying  child” rules.

To be your dependent for 2021, he will have to qualify under the Qualifying relative rules, which has a $4300 income test.
