Hi,

I am a postdoctoral fellow (not a student) who is a resident alien without a tax treaty. So, I received just a statement for my fellowship award stating the amount received. They also guided us, saying that as this is an award and not a wage, it is not subject to FICA tax. I am assuming the federal tax is around 7-8% and the FICA tax is around 8%, so for my case of a fellowship award, I should be taxed only the federal amount, i.e., 7-8%  (correct me if I am wrong)? When I enter the required details to turbotax using the "other income solution" that many posts mention, it moves my award amount to Schedule 1 (line 8r) hopefully, which avoids the additional self employment tax.  However, it appears I am still taxed to the amount of 13-14%. Do you know how I can fix this?

The Federal income tax rate starts at 10% and quickly jumps to 12%.

Look at the forms.  Your income tax is shown on line 16 of form 1040.  The self employment tax (FICA) is shown separately on line 23 (transferred from Schedule 2)
