Received a 1099-T for partial payment towards tuition in 2023, but class did not start until January 2024. How can I get deduction since she wasn’t a student in 2023?

My daughter was not a student in 2023. Her classes started in January of 2024. She did receive a 1099-t for partial tuition payment she made in 2023, but since she was not considered a full time student in 2023, I do not deduct this expense in her taxes.

A . You are allowed to claim a tuition credit on your 2023 tax return. A special rule allows you to claim payments made in 2023, for the first academic term of 2024, as ling as that term starts before April 1. 

 

When asked what your enrollment status for 2023 was, answer based on your 1st term 2024 status (full time, halftime or more, less than half time). This assumes, you were officially enrolled in school (accepted) in 2023.
