IRS has rejected our joint return. I did not check a box that says 'spouse claim as dependent lnd'. Can anyone tell me where that box is located in turbo tax?

"Spouse claimed as dependent" in the reject message refers to the box that says your spouse can be claimed as a dependent by someone else. ("Ind" stands for indicator.) It has nothing to do with education credits. But you did not give the complete exact reject message, including the code, so we can't tell what the problem is.

You can never claim your spouse as a dependent, so there is no box for that. You can claim an education credit for your spouse even though your spouse is not your dependent.

Please post the complete exact reject message, including the code. Also tell us whose name is first on your tax return and whose name is second. The person whose name is listed second is referred to as the spouse.

    Q. Can anyone tell me where that box is located in turbo tax?

    A. In the personal info section of TurboTax.  After entering your spouse's info (name, birthdate, etc), the next screen will be "Do any of these apply to (her name)".  One of the check boxes will be "Someone else can claim (her name) on their tax return".
