Hi there, my educational institution included tuition and related expenses for an academic period beginning Spring 2017. Can I claim this on 2017 instead of this year?

It depends on when those expenses were paid. Form 1098-T sent by your school should report what was paid in 2016.

If you paid in 2016, then the expenses would only be deductible on your 2016 tax return. Likewise, if you won't pay this until 2017, you would report the expenses next year.
