State Residency for tax purposes for Grad Student attending school in a different state
I have a question regarding state residency status for grad students.
I graduated from undergrad (in the state of Washington) in March of 2021. School was online at that point so I was living in Hawaii with my parents at the time. I worked for several months (about $2000 working in Hawaii) and then got accepted to a graduate program in September (same as my undergrad school, in the state of Washington).
I work as a TA after getting accepted and most of my income (~$8000) is from my TA job in the state of Washington.
My parents provided over half of my support in 2021 and will be claiming me as a dependent. I intend to move out of Hawaii and make Washington my home because I now have a job to support myself. My question is if they claimed me as a resident on federal return, do I have to file as a Hawaiian resident for state taxes because they are both residents of Hawaii and claimed me as a dependent in my case? (They are both residents of Hawaii and file as residents.) Or am I allowed to file as a non-resident (resident in Washington) despite them providing over half of the support and claiming me as a dependent?
Thank you!
