Student Expenses

I don't claim my student child as a dependent. However the option to enter non-dependent student expenses is available. If I enter expenses my taxes owed decreases.

I thought I could not claim education expenses for a non dependent.

What am I missing?

Thank You

You may not claim educational expenses, for a non-dependent, for an education credit or deduction.

If you have a 529 plan distribution for a non-dependent beneficiary, you may claim any of his  expenses , unless it duplicates expenses being claimed on his return or by the person that does claim him as a dependent.
