Teaching Credential

In 2019, my wife worked as a Special Ed Assist at our high school.  She has been working on obtaining her special ed teaching credential.  Can we deduct her tuition?  Course books/materials?  She's only taking one class at a time.

    Yes, if the courses are taken at a regular college ("eligible institution").  It is not eligible for the more generous American Opportunity tax credit (AOTC) (must be half time or more and not already have a bachelor's degree).  But, you are eligible for either the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC) or the Tuition and Fees Deduction (TFD).  Turbotax will select the best one.

     

    In TurboTax (TT), enter at:

    Federal Taxes Tab (Personal for H&B version)

    Deductions & Credits
