Question

The IRS is stating I claimed the American Opportunity Credit. How do I find out on my return if that has been filed?

If you entered a Form 1098-T on your tax return or entered education expenses for your return then there will be a Form 8863, Education Credits included with your tax return.  Also, any credit from the Form 8863 Line 19 will be entered on IRS Form 1040 Schedule 3 Line 50.  The credits from Schedule 3 flow to Form 1040 Line 12.

Look at your tax return to see if these forms, schedules and credits are entered on the 2018 tax return.   If you do not have any education credits entered on the 2018 tax return then use the phone number on the IRS notice you received to contact the IRS and get this issue resolved.

When you sign onto your online account and land on the Tax Home web page, scroll down and click on Add a state.  See screenshot

This will take you back to the 2018 online tax return.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen.  Then click on Print Center.  Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.  Choose the option Include government and TurboTax worksheets
